The hoodie is a staple of any man’s closet, from the noble university hoodie that served you well from frosh to graduation, to the zip-up hoodie your ex-girlfriend forgot at your place that you still sometimes hold close to you in the dead of night.
But where did the hoodie come from? What mad genius took the hood of a jacket and stitched it onto a sweatshirt?

The Chaperon: The Original Big and Tall Hoodies for Men
In truth, the hoodie has existed in one form or another for thousands of years. That is, if you want to count the hooded ponchos people wore in the Middle Ages as the original big and tall hoodies. Known as “chaperons,” these versatile pieces of peasant couture were required wear for outdoor labourers (re: 99.9 per cent of the population) and travelers, for whom it doubled as a sleeping bag.
However, the hoodie as we know it first came into existence in the 1930s. They were made by Champion (then known as the “Knickerbocker Knitting Company”) for outdoor workers in upstate New York who, like their ancestors, needed big and tall hoodies to stay warm and keep the snow off their heads.
But the resurrected chaperons didn’t take off until the 70s, when they became symbols of rebellion as they were embraced by skateboarders and graffiti artists: both groups that needed to stay warm while obscuring their faces from squares and cops. Starting in those communities, the hoodie then spread into the nascent punk and hip hop music scenes.
It also helped that the great Sly Stallone wore a hoodie for about 90 per cent of the original Rocky, exempting only the parts where he was shirtless in the ring trading punches with Apollo Creed.
The Rise of the Hoodie
Hoodie culture really took off in the ‘90s when the spirit of rebellion spread to millions of disaffected high school kids the moment they turned on MTV and heard Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time.
Today, since the mainstream acceptance of alt rock and rap in the ‘90s and early 2000s, the hoodie is pretty far removed from its renegade roots. From celebrities to construction workers, there are hoodies for men and women no matter their style.
Big and tall hoodies for men are a particular godsend for men who have trouble finding clothes that fit their irregular shapes, especially on those days when you roll out of bed and just want to throw something on without worrying about it looking weird on you.
